What is faith and where does it come from?
You may have wondered where faith comes from and how you are able to get enough for yourself and for your life. The Word has answers for us concerning faith. Hebrews 12:2 says that Jesus is the author and finisher of our faith, meaning faith comes from Him and He helps us work on our faith to perfection. 1 Corinthians 12:9 tells us that wonder working faith is a gift from God. These scriptures tell us that the faith we need to believe in Him is truly a gift, a tool from Him to enable us to believe in Him and to have a relationship with Him.
Webster’s Dictionary defines faith as: “a belief and trust in and loyalty to God, as well as a firm belief in something for which there is no proof.” There is a completeness and a steadfastness in true faith. God never gives us an incomplete gift. He gives us everything we need to lead a victorious life in Him.
The Word even tells us that faith is a tangible thing. Hebrews 11:1 (KJV) says, “Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.” The Amplified Bible says it this way: “Now faith is the assurance (the confirmation, the title deed) of the things we hope for, being the proof of things (we) do not see and the conviction of their reality (faith perceiving as real fact what is not revealed to the senses.)”
What is faith for and how do you use it?
This gift of faith can be used for our lives and for others for salvation and right-standing with God. We all need faith to believe in Jesus as our Lord and Savior. We are saved by our faith in Christ. (Eph. 2:8) In Romans 3, Paul tells us that a person is justified and made upright by his faith in Jesus apart from good deeds and observance of the Law.
We can and need to use faith when anything in life comes against us. This gift of faith is more powerful than we can imagine. In the gospels, Jesus tells us if we have faith the size of a mustard seed, we can tell the mountains to be removed and cast into the sea, and it will happen. He also told several healed people, “Your faith has made you well.”
In Ephesians, Paul tells us to be steadfast, faithful and to persevere in prayer and having done so, stand, fully equipped with our heavenly armor which includes the overarching shield of faith with which “we can quench all the flaming missiles of the wicked one.”
I believe that each of us can cultivate and grow the gift of faith that the Lord has given us. Meditate on His Word, think on His faithfulness, remember His constant love toward you. With that faith, we can be all the Lord says we are and we can do all the Lord says we can do.
